Here's a giant mural I completed in December at the Nyumba ya Masambiro community centre in Ruarwe, Malawi. As with all my 2D work it began with one circle and grew from that point, every line from then on is interconnected, existing only because of the previous one; a visual representation of the fact that everything in our world is connected in an infinite web, everything existing because of something else, nothing completely alone. There is the occasional circle that floats within it, the starting point of an alternative drawing. Children spent hours tracing the lines, looking for their own creatures and objects, things that are part of their world. Dan

The Gardens at Nyumba ya Masambiro

One reason why I went to Malawi was to be an artist in residence at Nyumba ya Masambiro, a community centre a UK based charity called Phunzira was building. I also went there to work in the gardens, my work is strongly influenced by the natural world and its processes. I am also very interested in permaculture and I had the opportunity to experiment with growing alternative crops and raising fish, looking into ways to alleviate the pressure we are putting on the natural world. The gardens at the centre ultimately will provide the main source of income. The plants grew and the fish were breeding. These photographs show various crops we grew, the fish pond, sustainable ways of growing and maximising natural resources. The first picture is my mind melting on a blackboard and the last picture is of where I'd go to think. Dan

The Library at Nyumba ya Masambiro

One of the projects I oversaw when I was the project manager at Nyumba ya Masambiro was the cataloguing of the library and its internal construction. Here are three sequential photographs; seemingly endless boxes of books, the library under construction and the finished room. This resource is now fully open and available to both the people of Ruarwe and the surrounding area. The village is inaccessible by road, it is incredibly isolated, it is incredibly full of amazing people, young and old. This library is now there for them, it is home to a huge range of books, it is one part of radically improving the opportunities and futures of people who welcomed me into their homes. The charity I was volunteering for, Phunzira, have done an absolutely amazing thing here and I am proud to be a part of it. www.phunzira.co.uk. Dan

An Absolute Privilege

I met a lot of amazing and humbling people while I was in Malawi. None more so than Auphans, a farmer and carpenter I worked with. He invited me into his family home, which is in the middle of primary forest accessible only by foot, and then we went on an adventure. A real adventure. We went deep into the forest following baboon trails and river valleys on a quest to reach a huge and inaccessible waterfall, home to sacred bananas and deep pools. We walked past an ancient earth rampart overgrown with jungle, the site of a stand-off between warring tribes many moons ago. Auphans had never been right to the bottom of the falls because of the snakes. I was the first outsider ever to go to these places...an absolute privilege for many many reasons. Here's a small selection of photographs from this particular adventure, I wish I'd taken more but spent most of my time in awe of the landscape or concentrating on not falling down sheer drops. I was commissioned by Butterfly Space to paint their new canoe, here it is. I will be photographing it on the lake when weather conditions allow. The design of these canoes hasn't changed for thousands of years however trees big enough to make them are becoming scarcer; several layers of paint will extend the lifetime of this boat. Gloss paints on wood, approximately five metres long.

Mature canopy included flame trees and flamboyants amongst others.

This is a new project I have initiated in Nkhata Bay in collaboration with
Butterfly Space and Chikale Primary School. Together with pupils at the
primary school we will be planting an avenue of flame trees along the main
path to the school at the school fair later this week. A lot of the grounds
are currently very barren, with little shade and very compacted ground.
Planting has already begun in other areas of the school through Butterfly
and this project will continue to improve the environment for both current
and future pupils as well people living in the village.

This creature with young is the first of a series of one off pieces made from recycled fabrics based on my drawings. Wall Painting at Mayoka Village, Nkhata Bay, Malawi

I have been commissioned by Mayoka Village, Nkhata Bay, Malawi to create a series of unique pieces in selected chalets at their lodge. This is the first one and is my first piece that is a tone on tone. The brief was to create a more pattern based piece, a form of hand painted wallpaper that would become the subtle focal point of the room. It revolves around the flora and fauna that envelops the lodge. Mayoka Village is the most popular lodge in Malawi and is regularly visited by people travelling throughout Southern and Eastern Africa. Oil based paints on lime plaster, approximately four metres by three metres.

In September I was invited to the Lake of Stars festival in Mangochi, Southern Malawi to paint a large mural in the centre of the festival site. Lake of Stars is an international music festival attracting acts and festival goers from around the planet, described by Q magazine as "Simply the finest festival in the world". The image grew from one initial circle and I painted it whilst sporadically hallucinating due to malaria. The piece of work exceeds twenty metres in length and is acrylic on plywood. She commissioned me to design some creatures inspired by the deep blue sea to be embroidered and quilted onto fabrics as well as a repeat pattern. With the help of sixty amazing kids I painted this mural at Blossom House School, an independent school for children with speech, language and communication difficulties, over five days in July. It is a collaboration with the science department and is based on the microscopic world, a recurring and central theme to my work.
