One reason why I went to Malawi was to be an artist in residence at
Nyumba ya Masambiro, a community centre a UK based charity called
Phunzira was building. I also went there to work in the gardens, my work
is strongly influenced by the natural world and its processes. I am
also very interested in permaculture and I had the opportunity to
experiment with growing alternative crops and raising fish, looking into
ways to alleviate the pressure we are putting on the natural world. The gardens at the centre ultimately will provide the main source of income. The plants grew and the fish were breeding. These photographs show various crops we grew, the fish pond, sustainable
ways of growing and maximising natural resources. The first picture is
my mind melting on a blackboard and the last picture is of where I'd go
to think. Dan
